Diabetes is a health epidemic beyond any other. And yet, so little is done to spur prevention and education on the topic.
In January, the New York Times did a series of 4 amazing investigative and informative articles (Bad Blood) about diabetes and espeically the epidemic in NYC.
Here are some facts :
-1 in 8 New Yorkers has diabetes
-The percentage of diabetics in the city is nearly a third higher than in the nation
-Tuberculosis, which infected about 1000 new yorkers last year gets $27 million and a 400 person staff to fight infection - diabetes gets $950,000 and 3 people.
-There are 20 times more diabetics in Spanish Harlem then there are in the Upper East Side
